Hair driers, fans and heaters in bedrooms. Secure parking in the yard. Breakfast and dinner available. The History of Clarendon Guest House from October 1918: The Rev. M.T.R. Smit took 12 orphaned children, whose parents died from the flu, from the farms to his parsonage. There they were cared for and in this way the Orphanage started. In co- operation with the Government, Rev. Smit built Boarding houses for poor children who lived far from town to facilitate their education. On 6 December 1924 the corner stone of this building was unveiled by Mrs. Smit, wife of the Rev. Smit. Until 1959, 120 girls were housed here annually. Then boys were housed here until 1962. The new Orphanage was built during the time of the Rev. Solly Ozrovech. In March, 1962, they moved into the new building complex. Clarendon Guest House has had several owners since then. On 21 April 1933 Lord and Lady Clarendon, Governor General of the Union of South Africa visited Ugie and the Houses for Orphans. During a ceremony in front of this boarding house for girls, a memorial tablet was unveiled to commemorate their visit. During 1937 the Orphanage of Ugie was registered and this was the biggest Orphanage in the Cape Province. In 1961 the name was changed to the M.T.R. Smit Childrens Haven.
