Andre & Lelanie Joubert Haggard's Hilldrop Guest Lodge is situated on a glorious 3 hectare indigenous forest and is approximately 4km from the centre of Newcastle. Our Establishment is for exclusive use of our Guests to enjoy our tranquility and peaceful surroundings. The original homestead of Sir Rider Haggard (famous Author of "King Solomon's Mines" & "Jess"), built in 1875 and declared a National Monument in 1981, today still stands in excellent form as the focal point of the property. The original homestead now houses the Breakfast Room, Dining Room, Offices and 3 stylishly furnished rooms decorated to suit the original history and ideal for the overseas visitor to relate themselves with Newcastle history. We also offer another 20 stylishly furnished En-Suite rooms of which some overlook a sparkling pool and others have a private balcony overlooking our indigenous forest. Every room has it's own private entrance and includes a television, M-Net, Ceiling Fan, Heater/s, Work Space and Coffee and Tea facilities, etc. We also offer secure and safe undercover parking with remote control access. The Dining - and Breakfast Areas still have the original yellowwood floors, door frames and log fire places with memorabilia like Novels of Sir Rider Haggard and sepia photographs of the Old House and many more collectables from over the years. From Mondays to Sundays a traditional breakfast is served, and chef David Mazibuko proudly produces hearty, traditional South African suppers from Monday to Thursday nights for those who want an evening meal. Our Pool Area hosts a Honesty Bar which has become known to our regular clients over the years and speaks for itself. It also has a Pool Table with Lounge Area and a Log Fire Place.
